This column is the starting point for the aquarium beginners and hobbyists who are not familiar with Nature Aquarium. Each article introduces aquarium fundamentals and acquaints you with the basic concepts and terminology of Nature Aquarium.

An Iwagumi layout reflects the tradition, culture, and spirituality that have been cultivated over the long course of history, although it is modeled after natural scenery. The number of Iwagumi enthusiasts is increasing throughout the world as Nature Aquarium gains popularity.

The water that fills Nature Aquarium supports the small ecosystem and nurtures all of the living things in it. A beautiful aquascape can only be created with the existence of this living water.

Nature Aquarium Gallery is the exhibition space of the planted aquarium layouts created by Mr. Takashi Amano, and it is open to public for free of charge during weekends and National holidays in Japan. Over 30 aquariums are exhibited in the gallery, and they are regularly replaced with new layouts.
